One of the best tourist spots in Washington. You may know the city for various factors, such as the grunge music, seahawk, or the origin of Starbucks. However, the city also has some amazing chefs to fulfill the needs of its food lovers. Some of these chefs even won the respectful James Beard Award from different categories.
With that being said, I have listed some of the top chefs in Seattle based on their popularity, food, and restaurants. Well, there are many of them, but I only wanted to include the top five. If you have any recommendations, feel free to share.
Renee Erickson- From Art to Cooking Art to Eatery Tycoon
A simple decision in life made Renee Erickson one of the best chefs in Seattle. She has a total of six restaurants in the city, and you can call her a tycoon at this point. However, her plan was originally to be an artist. Later, when she worked in Boat Street to afford art classes, she received an offer to buy it, which she accepted. The business grew steadily and smoothly, and the rest is what you can see now.
Outside her restaurants and kitchens, she is a supporter of Seattle’s minimum wage increase program. According to it, one must have at least a $15 hourly wage, which she established in her restaurants way before it was official.
Renee Erickson owns six restaurants in Seattle. They are as below-
Bateau, Boat Street Café, Barnacle, Bar Melusine, The Whale Wins, and The Walrus and the Carpenter.
Awards and Achievements-
- Renee Erickson won the James Beard Award for Best Chef: Northwest in 2016.
- Pleased with her restaurants, Bon Appetit magazine published an article with her profile titled, ‘Why Seattle is One of the Most Exciting Places to Eat in the Country.’
Aisha Ibrahim- Rising Star in Seattle’s Culinary Scene
Who doesn’t want to eat at a James Beard Award-winning restaurant, especially if the chef is as good as Aisha Ibrahim? I do, at least. Aisha Ibrahim is a Pilipino and lived in West Virginia at an early age. Before her culinary career, she used to be a basketball athlete at Elon University.
Later, she completed culinary school and went to different parts of the world to enhance her cooking skills. She worked at famous and top-level restaurants, like Manresa from California, Eneko Atxa from Spain, and Aziamendi in Thailand.
Currently, Ibrahim doesn’t have a restaurant of her own. Instead, she works as the executive chef of Canlis. Most Seattle food lovers know this place.
Ibrahim is planning open a restaurant of her own recently. But, unfortunately, her plan is being halted for the Covid lockdown.
Awards and Honors-
Aisha Ibrahim is known for being the very first female executive chef in the well-known restaurant Canlis. However, she only joined here recently, in 2020.
Aside from this, she doesn’t have any big awards..yet. However, her current workplace, Canlis, won the James Beard Award for Outstanding Restaurant in 2016.
Aisha Ibrahim didn’t author any cookbooks yet, and I am eagerly waiting for one.
Edouardo Jordan- So Many Accolades with Just Two Restaurants
Edouardo Jordan is both a chef and a restaurant owner, and he excels at both roles. Growing up in Florida, he had an education in both businesses from the University of Florida and culinary at Orlando Culinary Academy. Afterward, he worked in several restaurants in Florida, Washington, New York City, and even Italy.
Before opening his restaurants, he worked at Sitka and Spruce and as a cuisine chef at Bar Sajor in Seattle. Finally, after staying three years in this city, Jordan opened Salare. Later, he won many awards for his restaurant and cooking skills.
Restaurants in Seattle-
Currently, Edouardo Jordan owns two restaurants in Seattle, Salare and JuneBaby. The former offers a menu containing Italian, Southern, and French cuisine.
He opened JuneBaby in 2017, focusing on the southern culinary custom.
Awards and Honors-
- Eduardo Jordan won the Rising star title from StarChefs in 2015.
- Eater, the Vox Media-owned site, named him ‘Seattle’s Chef of the Year’ in the same year.
- In 2016, Jordan won Food & Wine’s ‘Best New Chefs of 2016’ title.
- JuneBaby got the Best New Restaurant in America title from Esquire magazine in 2017. It also won the Best New Restaurant from James Beard Foundation the following year.
- He won the Best Chef: Northwest from James Beard Foundation in 2018.
Edouardo Jordan didn’t author any cookbooks. Let’s hope that he does.
Ethan Stowell- The Native Culinary Star
Ethan Stowell is another big name and a fantastic chef to enhance the beauty of Seattle’s culinary part. As a native, he knows what people here love. Apparently, Stowell and Edouardo, that I just talked about, are friends, and it doesn’t seem like they are seriously rivaling each other with their eateries. In an interview, Stowell said that he loves how everyone cooperates and helps each other in Seattle.
As a fan of Italian foods, including Pasta and spicy foods, you can also expect the same in his restaurants. Currently, he is working to have a firm standing after the Covid pandemic.
Ethan Stowell has so many restaurants in Seattle. One of his most famous is How to Cook a Wolf. Other than it, there are Rione XIII, Staple & Fancy, Red Cow, Cortina, Goldfinch Tavern, Tavolata, etc.
They all include some of the best services you will find in a restaurant, speaking from personal experience. The foods are also great in taste, nutrition, and decoration.
Ethan Stowell and his wife, Angela Stowell, won the Outstanding Restaurateur award from the James Beard Foundation in 2018.
Rachel Yang- Owner of a Four-in-One Restaurant
There is a reason why food critics and food-related award organizers praised Joule and three other restaurants in Seattle so much. After all, they are owned by Rachel Yang, a culinary genius. She has been working with her husband in her restaurants since they came to the city in 2007.
Her Trove is one grand place for food lovers. It has four different functions to please everyone. First, there is a Korean BBQ with both dishes in plate cook-it-yourself style. Meanwhile, there are also a noodle corner, a bar, and a takeaway service.
The whole main reason Trove restaurant is so famous is that it’s not just one, but four different eatery systems in one. However, the main attraction I loved was the cook-it-yourself style Korean barbeque, as it feels like you are around a campfire and directly involved in preparing the food.
Meanwhile, her Joule is also another Korean-French-style restaurant. Yang owns another restaurant named Revel, which serves basic Korean dining, yet its foods are top-tier.
- Frank Bruni, a former food critic, once stated Revel’s rice bowls as the ‘Best Thing I Ever Ate.’
- Yang and his husband, Chirchi, won the ‘Best Chef: Northwest’ from the James Beard Foundation.

Every year in Seattle, new chefs come to the front to prove their cooking prowess. There are many rising stars, like Shota Nakajima and Jay Blackinton. There are also famous ones like the ones we mentioned, as well as Mark Schroder, Anna Vogel, Eric Donnelly, etc. The city is lucky to have so many prominent chefs.
